Nutrition Awareness For Kids

I believe nutrition awareness should start at home first and since school is the second home of our children, they should also promote and encourage healthy eating habits of their students. School programs can help children attain full educational and healthy eating habits by giving social support.

Happy nanay here kasi sa school ng kids ko no need to pay for an expensive costumes and Principal always encourage parents to be creative. Last year, we created hat out of recycled milk boxes and my husband helped sa drawing. See below photo from my instagram: Laking tipid dba? Art papers lang at glue okay na.

Year 2016 Nutrition Awareness

For this year, 2017 I prepared face mask, see below:

Star Apple and Pineapple Face Mask

There are ways on how we can promote healthy eating habits in school or at home.

  1. I am preparing home cooked meals for my children and to make more fun, I am creating bento for kids.
  2. Let the children know the effects of junk food consumption.
  3. Healthy snacks or meals should be served in school.
  4. Let the children bring at least 1 fruit for each meal, cutting them into pieces will help.
  5. Follow the food pyramid, consists of Grow, Go and Glow.
  6. Be a role model to your children by drinking and eating fruits and vegetables.
  7. Do not skip breakfast.

Let’s promote healthy eating habits to our children.

Elledi Philippines: The Everyday Baon Dilemma

School baon preparation can be a daunting task for any parent, as it involves not only meal planning for the week, but making sure your child will come home with an empty lunch box and a full tummy. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have to be a struggle and you don’t have to lose sleep over it. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your kid’s baon:

Aim for Variety
A good mix of nutritious home-cooked meals and grab-and-go snacks. Involve your child in the baon planning, take this time as a good opportunity to teach him the value of food and eating right. Ask what he would like to eat at school and you can even take him to supermarket runs with you. This will encouraged them to finish their food at school, knowing how much effort and love it takes to prepare the baon.

Prep the Night Before
Set aside a portion from last night’s ulam for a healthy home-cooked meal. This will save you time and money, and help you avoid geting frazzled wth the early morning scurry.
Baon suggestions: Adobo, Kare-Kare, Sinigang, Arroz ala Cubana, Afritada

Be Creative
Lunchbox ideas can quickly cycle. Repeating the same kind of ulam on a weekly basis may help create that easy prep routine for you, but it may not be appetizing on your child’s taste buds, and that yummy fritata can easily end up as that boring fritata in your child’s mind. So it’s always good to make creative and fun baon choices. Recess snacks don’t always mean sandwiches. It doesn’t have to be plain ‘ol boring bread and jam. You can experiment, consider how colors and textures also influence your child’s eating habits.

Moderation is Key
Yes, our aim as parents is to always go for the healthy variety, but it wouldn’t hurt to squeeze in a sweet treat or two within the school week. Ask your child what store-bought item he would like to find inside his lunch box? It could be a doughnut, a sugary juice brick or a box of cookies. As long as most of your food choices for your kids are healthy ones, they can occasionally enjoy a nice dessert.

Recess baon suggestions: Doughnuts, Elledi wafers, Elledi roll breaks, cupcakes, ChipNChips Potato Chips, brownies, Elledi Frollkao, Ube hopia and apple pie.

Don’t sweat it, Mom and Dad!

The good thing about grab-and-go treats is you can simply stow them inside the lunch box real quick, you get the baon prep done just before the school service arrives.

Overall, parents are not given their due when it comes to getting lunchboxes done. It’s hard work. It is. And you’ll be doing it ’til your kid graduates or until he decides he is big enough to make his own. And on certain days, some school lunches maybe more meticulously prepared than others, and some baons maybe are just simple store-bought snacks, but the important thing here, is that your kid know that mom and dad prep their baon out of love.

Yvan’s Journey to Life

Whenever I remember those days Yvan is closer to death as the doctor say. I can’t hide the feeling of being lost and somewhere asking myself why this is happening to my son. But what parents can do is ilaban ang anak. And we did not gave up on Yvan. Thankful to all our family, friends and even people who are living outside the country  helped. I will always be thankful and grateful to God for giving life to my son.

Ang aming sandigan

Doctors said kung mabuhay man ang anak ko, he will suffer until he grows up. Why? Because he has Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia, “BPD involves abnormal development of lung tissue. It most often affects premature babies, who are born with underdeveloped lungs.” Dysplasia” means abnormal changes in the structure or organization of a group of cells. The cell changes in BPD take place in the smaller airways and lung alveoli, making breathing difficult and causing problems with lung function.”

BPD is most often due to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). RDS in turn is the result of a specific problem with lung development. The lungs of some premature infants can’t yet make enough surfactant. Surfactant is a liquid that coats the inside of the lungs and helps keep them open. These infants need replacement surfactant and may also need to be put on a ventilator (breathing machine).”

What causes Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia?

  1. Prematurity – babies who are born more than 10 weeks early and weigh less than 4.5 pounds (2,000 grams). These babies are more likely to develop RDS (also called hyaline membrane disease), which is a result of tissue damage to the lungs from being on a mechanical ventilator for a long time.

That time, (year 2012) one vial of surfactant costs P 30,000.00, and they said, kung hindi mabigyan si Yvan, his lungs will collapse and that will cause his death. We are just given 24 hours to provide I think 2-4 vials. And because we don’t have enough money to buy for at least one vial, we seek help from family and friends, we received a lot of help when my friend and kumare posted our condition to Facebook. Then, we have enough money to buy unfortunately surfactant is not available in any drugstore. Bumagsak mundo namin ng husband ko.Yes, there’s none sa Mercury Drug store, and lahat ng pharmacy sa hospital ay sinuyod ko 24/7 just to find that vial but we failed.

Kneeled down to God and talked to him, kung kukunin niya na si Yvan, hindi po namin kakayanin. Please tulungan niyo po si Yvan to survive kahit wala na yung surfactant.

And a MIRACLE PLAYER was answered, Yvan survived without the surfactant. This was taken when he was 2-3 weeks old.

Suddenly,  infection was seen through, he had sepsis and blood infection that might cause serious effect on his internal organs. In this case, God really tested our faith and loved for our child. We seek help for blood donations, not just red blood plasma, but he needed white blood (frozen) and I need to come every four hours to Department of Health in Manila to reserve for that since it is rarely donated. Days passed by and things don’t really turn well and all those sufferings we ask God to be with our son. Our little man Yvan was a fighter and whenever I hold his hands, he responds. That we promised we won’t let go of him whatever it takes.

Thank you to all my Smart Parenting Mommy friends who stand by me during this struggle. Some I did not able to take photos 🙁

Celebration cake given by his God parents. He survived! Umabot na po siya ng 1 month. 🙂 God is great and have mercy.

After two months of staying in Pasay City General Hospital, against medical advice we bring Yvan home, whatever happens I know God is with my son. Days, weeks and months pass by. Alam kong ramdam ni Yvan na hindi kami bibitaw.

Weaning Moments 🙂

God is truly merciful and He knows how much we loved our little man and He never fails. With continuous prayers, medical treatment, check-up, blood examinations and oxygen support and loved we received from many people, our son survived. More photos you can see here

What is Yvan’s current condition right now?

Our little man celebrated his 4th birthday last April 2016, Praise GOD!

At the age of 4, yes he don’t easily gain weight because of BPD’s complication. But we are grateful that he is now alive and making us happy and inspired. He was diagnosed to have Bilateral Hearing Loss and this was the disability that the doctor was talking about before. He is now using a hearing aid and coping.

What God wants us to know?

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5 ESV

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:2

Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.” Matthew 21:21

If not for love, prayers we have been receiving, Yvan won’t be here right now. I don’t regret losing anything up to the last cent that we have, debts here and everywhere, what matters is that my son is ALIVE and FIGHTING. I am thankful to our creditors that they have patience and soon we’ll be settled.

Thoughts to share

Family that suffers together, stays stronger.

Money is just money, kayang kitain yan, but the life you’ll loose, hindi na.

Always pray for strength and courage.  “I can do all things through Christ, which strengthens me.” [PHP 4:13]

Never ever give up.  For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

God always provide.  The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him may your hearts live forever! Psalm 22:26

To our little warrior, Yvan

You know how much mom and dad loves you. We are sorry this happened. We will always be here for you and everytime I thought of leaving this earth, iniisip ko kayo nila kuya and ate kung pano na kayo pag nawala ako? I know God won’t allow me to go first so I can take care of you, my children. I am sorry if sometimes may pagkukulang si mommy. As much as we wanted to give you the most things you needed, rough times came in. We will try our best to make things well and I hope you’ll aways continue to be a fighter and make this family united. You are very much loved and blessed anak. Thank you for being our inspiration to life and you’ve touched many lives.

Words may not be enough anak, but we love you more than anything this world can offer.

Kapit lang tayo anak,

Thank you Daddy for all the hard work, sacrifices you did for our son, up to this time you are doing your best kahit wala ng tulugan just to give our children good life and continues with the treatment. I love you more for that.
