Kids Camp at the Farm by MAD Travel & Human Nature

A truly well-rounded education should involve training not only the mind, but the heart and the hands too.

kids-camp-kv

Last November 19, social tourism enterprise MAD (Make A Difference) Travel in partnership with Human Heart Nature organized a Kids Camp for children aged between 5 and 12 at the GK Enchanted Farm. Children got involved in a series of hands-on activities, from farming, feeding the pigs, peanut butter making competitions with First Harvest to stitching their own stuffed toys with Plush & Play, bread making & designing cookies with Make Peace Bakery.

These fun activities help to connect the children to nature through experiential learning. “Through farming, animal feeding and planting, the kids will get a better idea of where their food comes from, and how important it is that we develop agriculture in a sustainable way,” Raf Dionisio, the co-founder of MAD Travel, explains. The kids had fun exploring & learning in the outdoors without their parents having to worry about mosquito bites, too! Each camper got a DEET-free Bug Shield Oil Spray by Human Nature, the first Asian brand to receive a Sustainable Beauty Award from Organic Monitor.

“With many of the activities centered around social enterprises based at the farm, children will also be given a fun introduction to social enterprise and see how business can serve not only to enrich ourselves, but to make the world a better place” Raf explains.

For children growing up in the age of iPads and video games, it is an opportunity for them to have fun outdoors and interact with kids from different backgrounds, including scholars from Gawad Kalinga communities, who will join them in certain activities.

For its part, Human Nature emphasizes that children need to be encouraged to “step away from the screens and into the sunlight” to become fully understand the world around them. Human Nature partnered with MAD Travel because it believes that the Kids Camp is a creative and fun way of teaching children about environmental sustainability and serving the poor.

Raf, who through MAD Travel has developed other eco- and social tourism initiatives across the country, believes in the importance of outdoor camps because they had such an impact on him as a child: “Thanks to the kids camps I attended, I really grew to love the countryside. Holding these camps at the Enchanted Farm can hold an even greater significance: through bringing together kids from vastly different backgrounds, we hope to inspire not only a future generation of successful people, but nation builders, too.”

The Kids Camp takes place at the GK Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan every month. The farm, surrounded by 40-hectares of land, is already hub for social entrepreneurs and volunteers coming from across the world. With high quality facilities such as a spa and an infinity pool, it is also a relaxing and inspiring destination for the entire family.

Upcoming Kids Camp schedule:  January 14, February 11, March 11, April 15

Registration fee is Php 2,200/head including farm-fresh lunch, (2) snacks, Human Nature Bug Shield Spray, and all activities in the itinerary. Round-trip transportation is available upon request.

Herbalife Nutrition At Work: Active Workplace Environment

While the survey conducted reveals that more Filipino millennials are engaging in regular physical activities outside work, they find it difficult to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle in the modern workplace.

13224128_1219749891379789_958177819_o
PHILIPPINES, October 27, 2016 – Herbalife Nutrition, a global nutrition company, has released the findings from its Asia Pacific Millennials At Work Survey1, which revealed that Filipino millennials are adapting a healthy, active lifestyle, however, most believe their current workplace environment prevents them from doing so.

Millennials, or people born in between 1980 and 2000, are opting for a workplace that will encourage them to stay active, if only this will be embedded in every company culture. About 83 percent or eight (8) in 10 millennials have agreed that they would like their company workplace to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle.

1

With the millennial generation expected to make up 50 percent of the global workforce by 2020, ensuring the wellbeing of millennials will be important to improving workplace productivity. “There are about 35 million millennials now in the Philippines, which is about one-third of the country’s entire population. Five years from now, millennials will be dominating the labor force. While most millennials want to lead healthy lives, they face real obstacles at work in doing so,” said Rosalio Valenzuela, Herbalife Philippines General Manager. “At Herbalife Nutrition, we provide our employees with nutrition products at work, subsidize gym memberships, hold regular wellness programs related to nutrition and well-being, and encourage participation in outdoor activities and sports competitions.”

Additionally, the survey findings revealed the following:
⦁ Seven (7) out of 10 millennials strive to live healthy, active lives
⦁ However, the majority of millennials find it challenging to maintain an active lifestyle at work – eight (8) out of 10 millennials spend 6 to 13 hours at their work desk each day, and 64% of millennials get less than 30 minutes of physical activity – including standing, stretching and walking at work on an average work day.
⦁ Additionally, 64% of millennials cited the “lack of time” as the key obstacle to engaging in physical activity at work.

To provide tips on how millennials and their employers can integrate positive nutrition and life style habits at their workplaces, Herbalife Nutrition has organized a sixth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour, which builds upon the successes of the past five tours that welcomed over 100, 000 participants. Five experts from the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB) are scheduled to tour 21 Asian cities from October 7 to 30, to hold a series of talks, workshops and medical symposia across the region.

“Through these efforts, we hope to equip organizations and employees with the right tools to collectively build a healthier work environment across Asia Pacific,” said Valenzuela.

Julian Alvarez Garcia, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, will be visiting Manila for the Asia Pacific Wellness Tour this October. Julian Alvarez Garcia, M.D., Ph.D. will also be sharing expert advice on how millennials can adopt simple positive nutrition and lifestyle habits at work to improve their overall well-being in the long run.

Some of the tips to help foster a healthier millennial workforce include:

⦁ Nutrition

⦁ Dedicate a healthy eating day each week and get colleagues involved in making healthy choices for lunch on this day.
⦁ Boost water intake to help the body digest food, rid the body of toxins, and help deliver nutrients to the cells. Drink at least eight (8) glasses or two (2) liters of water a day.
⦁ Have a protein shake combined with non-fat milk and healthy fruit for breakfast. With 20-30 grams of protein and low-fat contents, it can provide the body with all the nutrition it needs to power through the day.

⦁ Active Living

⦁ Create a playlist that incorporates upbeat music and play with hourly intervals.
⦁ Use Running Apps to keep energized and on-pace during regular runs.
⦁ Set a goal to join running competitions to motivate self to sustain an active lifestyle.

Herbalife’s Millennials At Work Survey was conducted in 2016, with 5,500 respondents aged 18 and above, from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Plasmacluster Ion Technology Proven to Decrease Risk of Tuberculosis Infection

The risk of developing Tuberculosis disease is much higher for those whose immune system are very weak compare to those with normal immune systems. We must be aware on how to prevent it and make our body healthy.

Manila, Philippines—Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that mostly affects the lung area. Its person-to-person spread can be attributed to whenever an infected person coughs, sneezes, spits, or even talks, and subsequently transfers microscopic saliva droplets to the air where they can be inhaled by anyone nearby.

The disease is still hitting the country hard with over 290,000 Filipino victims every year. The World Health Organization has confirmed a total number of 9 million cases worldwide with yearly death tolls reaching up to 1.5 million.

Developing countries like the Philippines are still the ones heavily affected by this disease and the fight for its total wipe-out is a movement that should involve different institutions—from the government, to the academe, and down to private organizations and corporations.

sharp_pr_-_pci_v21

This year, Sharp, together with the WHO Global Health Workforce Alliance National Center of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, has put together a team of experts to test and study the power of the Plasmacluster Ion Technology in preventing the spread and infection of Tuberculosis. Plasmacluster Ion Technology, or PCI, is Sharp’s proprietary air purifying technology that uses positive and negative ions to deactivate the effects of airborne viruses, bacteria, allergens and microbes by up to 99%.

For the study, 140 Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology devices were placed inside a special Tuberculosis hospital in Tbilisi, Georgia. Both healthcare workers and patients were requested to join and participate.

The healthcare workers who were initially tested to be negative carriers of Tuberculosis became the first core group of participants. To check the effectivity of the devices, they were once again tested for any TB infections 8 months after the installation.

For the 155 Tuberculosis culture positive patients, 49 were initially found without ADR (Acquired Drug Resistance) after the initial Drug Susceptibility Test 2. These 49 patients soon underwent the Plasmacluster Ion Technology trial—this time to determine its efficacy in preventing ADR in TB culture positive patients.

For both groups, the experiment came in with favorable results. The Plasmacluster Ion Technology reduced the risk of healthcare workers to carry the Tuberculosis bacteria. Only 1 out of 10 workers in the PCI-protected area tested as a positive carrier while rooms without PCI resulted to 6 out of 15 positive carriers.

sharp_pr_-_hospital_ward_-_ion_generator_v21

There was also a reduction in number of patients with Acquired Drug Resistance from the Plasmacluster Ion Technology-equipped room with only 1 out of 25 patients compared to the 4 out of 19 affected patients in rooms without the devices.

sharp_pr_-_pci1

With over 28 academic trials executed over the years, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology has already proven itself effective in reducing the spread of other hazardous substances such as influenza virus, drug-resistant bacteria, and mite allergens. It even lessens the risk of tracheal inflammation in childhood asthma patients.

Since 2000, Sharp’s involvement in various testings only attest to their dedication and passion in affirming the Plasmacluster Ion Technology’s effectiveness in keeping people around the globe safe and secure. With this vision, Sharp will continue to challenge and test its own engineering to further serve the population better.

Know more about the Plasmacluster Ion Technology by visiting www.sharp.ph and follow us on Facebook (Sharp Philippines) and Instagram (@sharp.ph).

1 ADR is the ability of microorganisms to resist antimicrobial agents in which it was initially susceptible.
2 Drug Susceptibility Test or DST is a test used to determine the correct medicine to administer to patients who carry the TB bacteria.
